In fact, it’s more a hotel than a coliving. In the peaceful environment of Monteverde, Selina is actually more often a brief stop in the tight journey of travelers than a slow paced coliving. We were happy that Selina was what we needed.
It’s hard to achieve focus when living as a digital nomad, moving from place to place, and not knowing in advance how comfortable your home space will be or if the cafés and coworkings around will be good.

We enjoyed so much having a proper coworking, with comfortable chairs and desks, free coffee and tea, and phone booths for video calls. A bit isolated though, since a car is necessary to freely move around and come to the small but lively town of Santa Elena. Selina in Monteverde is a place with good vibes, surrounded by forest, and with amenities that will make you feel very comfortable. Awesome setup but you are right in the middle of a cheap cocaine fuelled EDM party town and will probably not sleep. Not really a space to work at all within the hostel.Įcuador (Montanita) has a nice one with a great separate coworking space, right on the beach with a pool / bar. If you are a beginner there are some whitewater options but you are in the middle of the swimmers.Ĭosta Rica (Santa Teresa North) was better because you at least were very close to the beach and some cafe / restaurants but Selina’s pissed off the locals by dumping their runoff sewage into the lot / path to the beach next to it. If you are a good surfer, there is a great (fast) right hand wave but it’s a single takeoff point which means everyone is sitting in the same spot fighting over the next wave. I recorded 92 decibels in my bed and we were about as far away as possible, other than the yurts. The live music / DJ was unbearably loud 3-4 nights a week. This does mean it concentrates people so you will meet tons of folks. It’s not close to any town so you are isolated between the hostel and the beach. It’s about a 15-20 minute walk (they have shuttles, for a price) to the beach each way.
It’s not close to anything, including the beach. I stayed at the Selina in Maderas in 2019. As long as you are engaging with the area you will meet people.
That group was so-so when I was there but is worth trying. Look for the digital nomad fb group, if there isnt one for floripa, join the Rio one and ask if someone can add you to the floripa whatsapp group and you can also meet people through there. If that is no bother to you and cost is important, stay nearby and hang out there.

With parties, sometimes they check if you are a guest, sometimes they dont.įor such a short stay, if you will be working full days, personally I would just stay at the Selina so that I'm not focusing on work, social connections, and getting to know the area all at the same time. Events and activities are also open to the public depending on what it is. Their restaurant and coworking space is public (coworking soace charges).
Brazil as a whole doesnt have a lot of English speakers so no matter where you go, you will find people to speak Portuguese with. The Selina there had a mix of everybody but yes you will see more foreigners than Brazilians. Uber is very affordable but sometimes the wait can be pretty long, so it's a tradeoff.
